Centennial is a city situated within the county of Arapahoe, in the state of Colorado within the US. It is a part of the Denver-Aurora metropolitan area. According to the 2010 Census, the city of Centennial had a total population of about 100,300, making it the 10th most heavily populated city in the state of Colorado. The city was incorporated on the 7th of February, the year 2001 and at that time the city was the biggest in U.S. history. Out of the nation, Centennial is ranked as the 15th safest city.
The city of Centennial was made from parts of unincorporated Arapahoe County, including the former Southglenn and Castlewood CDPs or likewise known as census-designated places. There was a vote on September 12, the year 2000 for the people to select a name and Centennial became the official choice. The name was chosen to be able to reflect the admission of Colorado State to the Union as the 38th State in 1876. This was the centennial year of the USA's Declaration of Independence. Approximately 77% of the voters approved the incorporation. Because the population of the area was more than 100,000 it was made the largest incorporation in United States history as of its creation.
The area of the city covers over 27.9 square miles or 72 km2. Divided in half by Interstate 25, most of the business and entertainment centers are situated west of the highway. The boundaries of the city of Centennial are fairly irregular and evocative of a gerrymander. The suburban eastern sections of the city appear with sections of Foxfield, Aurora and areas which are incorporated too.
The city's geography consists of many hills gullies, open spaces and ravines which are accompanied by recreational trails, like for instance DeKovend Park, the Highland Canal and the Dry Creek Dam. Centennial is home to lots of native wildlife and is a part of Colorado's front-range ecosystem. The city has seen a boost in coyote populations in recent years. This increase has resulted in resident education about ways to deter coyotes from eating pets of the family within the region.
