A big problem which would have to be dealt with is pedestrian safety. Based on the NIOSH or the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health; approximately 20 percent of all forklift accidents include a pedestrian being struck by a forklift. This statistic means roughly nineteen thousand individuals on an annual basis.
So as to keep everyone safe, there are several basic steps that must be taken into account. This is regardless to how frequently or briefly people are around industrial trucks during their work day. One of the major considerations is that forklift pedestrian accidents often occur in situations where the pedestrian is not aware of safety measures. Issues also occur more frequently when the pedestrian ends up complacent because she or he has become used to frequent interaction with forklifts.
There are some common situations to look out for so as to avoid placing yourself at potential risk from being struck by a forklift. Pedestrians not seeing the lift truck is a common problem that needs to be addressed. Many operations have different degrees of blind corners or intersections that pedestrians must be aware of. At times pedestrians do not hear the lift truck. Be very careful of the different types of power sources. For example, electric trucks can be a lot quieter compared to IC engines that are super loud.
The other main problems are when pedestrians come in too close proximity of the equipment. Common sense tells us that in order for a pedestrian to be injured by a forklift, the pedestrian has to be in close enough proximity to be struck. For a forklift which is working, a four foot safety zone is suggested so as to make a safe perimeter for everybody. This really helps to address risks like the unit driving accidentally over the foot of a pedestrian.
Following and implementing strict safety protocol helps to make sure that the workplace safety remains paramount and stays top notch.
For the majority of indoor operations, a lift truck is operated with the use of cushioned tires that mean they are made out of solid rubber tires. The pneumatic type of tires is truly the ideal alternative outdoors. Pneumatic tires are common for heavy cargo and can be used on asphalt surfaces and on dirt roads.
For the most part, propane powered machinery is believed to be safe. Propane has the reputation for being a clean burning fuel source. If the engine or machine is not correctly tuned or maintained, then the propane powered engine could emit carbon monoxide or CO, along with other corrosive oxides of nitrogen. Any internal engine which is not in optional working form can have a similar situation occur. These produced gases can be really noxious within confined or incorrectly ventilated spaces.
Propane models emit less harmful gases than diesel and gasoline powered forklifts. The chemical structure of propane is rather simple. As it is a gas, propane mixes well with air, compared to diesel or gasoline and burns at a low temperature. Caustic oxides of nitrogen created during propane combustion in the engine are a lot less compared to those emitted by a gas or diesel engine. Thus, a propane lift truck's engine typically lasts much longer compared to a diesel or gasoline powered lift truck unit.
Internal combustion engines work by sucking in air from the surrounding area. This air reacts with the fuel causing it to burn. A 60 horse-power lift truck has to breath in five thousand cubic feet of air per minute in order to work. Prior to operation, it is recommended to switch on a propane lift truck outside and allow it warm up for a bit. This is because of the carbon monoxide emissions as they read higher from a cold propane-powered engine or machinery and become less intoxicating when the machine has had a chance to warm up.
